Course Length: Approximately 40 hours
Prerequisites: VMS System Management or equivalent.
DSM System Management is designed for the student who has either taken VMS System Management or has equivalent experience. This course assumes a thorough understanding of the VMS Operating System, Version 5 or greater.
The course begins by showing all components of the DSM environment. Each component is discussed in detail.
The installation, initialization and startup procedures are simulated to give students an understanding of how to use these procedures on their own. Configuration security is covered, including the ability to create captive accounts, automatic login and tied terminals.
The concept of DSM Volume Sets are covered. A complete description of a Volume Set is given, including descriptions of the directory, pointer, and data block levels. All relevant Volume Set and Global utilities are covered.
Routine management is covered, including an introduction to the M language and DSM routine mapping. Mapping is related to the VMS paging and shared global section concepts. The concept of non-default Volume Set based Routine Directories is covered.
Distributed Data Processing is covered, including how it relates to global accesses and maintenance utilities. Journaling and Image Journaling are explained. Developing a journal environment using journaling utilities is explained relative to VMS files and data integrity. Before Image Journaling, Roll Back, After Image Journaling, and Incremental Backup are explained.
The DSM I/O capabilities are covered. The student will learn to communicate with VMS devices through M code and the supported utilities. DECservers and their operational components are discussed as well.
The last study unit teaches performance monitoring, at the VMS and DSM levels. The student will learn to collect performance information and adjust the appropriate DSM and/or VMS parameters.
Upon the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
