Course Length: Approximately 40 hours
Prerequisites: The student should have completed the Introduction
to File Manager course or have equivalent experience.
Intermediate File Manager has been designed for the person responsible for data base searching and report creation.
First, basic concepts from Introduction to File Manager will be reviewed. Once the review is complete, the flat file concept is viewed as a series of shelves (entities) on a wall. Each shelf contains boxes (attributes) that contain values (elements). This shelf analogy is used throughout the course to represent the database.
The student then compares the analogy to the relational database developed with File Manager. Next, the File Manager expression is taught. Operators are explained. To illustrate how operators work, boxes from each shelf and their values are graphically combined with the operator to form a result. Next, File Manager expression is explained.
Once creation of a search expression is understood, interactive practical exercises permit the student to create a search expression using File Manager. The searching is done on an integrated database. After the student becomes proficient at creating search expressions, the concept of sorting is covered in depth keys and indexes concepts.
Finally, once the student knows how to sort and search a database, advanced report generation techniques are covered using the Print option of File Manager to create reports through interactive exercises.
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:
